Clean Energy
The powerhouse of Europe for
offshore and onshore renewable energy
and low carbon projects
Our climate and geography put us at the crest of a renewable energy wave
The area is pioneering floating offshore wind development and, with 80% of the world’s offshore wind potential in deep waters, the freeport and it’s links with research and academia will help to secure it as a global centre of excellence. The latest supply chain submissions put the potential value of maximising UK content at £2.0bn per GW – i.e. a total of some £40bn by the mid-2030s off Scotland alone, with more to follow as the UK moves to net zero by 2050.
The UK’s highest mountains and largest inland lochs (lakes), combined with a high rainfall, means the Highlands are perfect for the Production of Hydro-Electricity.
Located on the north-western edge of Europe, the region is home to incredibly rich wave and tidal resources which offer the world’s most comprehensive route to develop, test and commercialise marine energy technologies.
With all this
Renewable Energy Generation,
the region is fast becoming the centre of innovative new ways of storing energy, such as through battery storage, and Power-to-X, converting renewable energy to green hydrogen. There are advanced opportunities for at-scale green hydrogen facilities within the Inverness and Cromarty Firth tax sites – which will make a major step towards the UK Government’s target of 10GW of H2 production by 2030 and address the programmed demand in continental Europe.
We are also committed to developing schemes which decarbonise our heat and introducing new and innovative low carbon heating systems across the region.
An impressive
giga watt hours of electricity was generated from renewable sources
in Highland in 2024.
Helping minimise the carbon footprints
of energy-intensive industries.
