Whyte & Mackay

A subsidiary of Emperador, Whyte & Mackay, has committed to double the footprint of its Invergordon Distillery from 45.4 hectares to 92 hectares as part of its £85m investment in Scotch whisky and in response to ‘growing global demand’ for whisky. The extension will enable the grain distillery to house an additional 1.5 million casks of maturing whisky.

The whisky giant is the largest distiller in the north of Scotland, is expected to be one of the first users of green hydrogen produced from a planned electrolyser on the Cromarty Firth. It believes its decarbonisation drive will be boosted by a scaling up of the clean gas production plant that is being enabled by Green Freeport status.

The acquisition of this site reflects the scale of their ambition, not just for the next few years but sees a committed programme of expansion covering the next 50 years.
